The snow is falling. The temperatures are dropping. The lights are twinkling.
To celebrate the season, why not enjoy some of the greatest Christmas movies ever created?
Sit back. Relax. And relish your time with Beacon Hill residents, family members, and friends, while watching the following 10 Christmas classics this month.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas.” This year, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It remains as timeless—and timely—today as ever before. First, the music is spectacular. Second, the storyline is tremendous. People of all ages will learn something from this animated treasure.
“A Christmas Carol.” Ever since Charles Dickens first published his novella in 1843, “A Christmas Carol” has been portrayed in countless plays and movies. If you haven’t before, consider watching the first-ever non-silent movie adaptation, which was released in 1938. If you have young grandchildren, they’ll also love to watch “The Muppet Christmas Carol.”
“A Christmas Story.” Since this film occurred in 1940, you may not realize just how “new” it is. Released in 1983, it has since become a Christmas classic for several reasons. First off, it’s flat out funny. In addition, it’s unusual—there really isn’t another Christmas movie quite like it. And, despite other moviemakers’ best efforts, there likely won’t be again. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to watch it this December.
“Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Without question, Dr. Seuss is an absolute legend. And “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” is arguably one of his best stories. Since releasing his book in 1957, it has been adapted into various versions. In 1966, an animated television special was created, which has since become a classic in its own right. Since then, two other versions have been released (in 2000 and 2018).
“Frosty the Snowman.” In 1969, Rankin/Bass Productions released one of its classic stop-motion animation films, “Frosty the Snowman.” Although more than half a century has since passed, it’s still viewed by millions of people every year. Why? It’s heartwarming. It’s festive. And it makes every viewer feel like they’re a kid again, at least for half an hour. Your younger grandkids will love this movie!
“Home Alone.” When you first think about this blockbuster smash, the word “classic” may not come to mind. However, it is 35 years old, believe it or not. It’s also become a mainstay for the holiday season. If your grandkids are in their 30s or 40s, they’ll especially like to watch it with you. Don’t forget about “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” either—an underrated movie!
“It’s a Wonderful Life.” This is the staple—the one movie that all filmmakers dream of creating. However, no Christmas movie will likely ever surpass it. It features nearly everything a movie can: comedy, drama, joy, life lessons, romance, and more. Not to mention, it arguably has the greatest ending of nearly any movie ever released. Be sure to introduce it to your grandchildren this holiday season!
“Miracle on 34th Street.” Released in 1947, this film is an absolute classic that will tug on your heart strings. Upon watching this film, you’ll quickly realize why it won three Academy Awards. You’ll also know why it continues to garner praise more than half a century later. In 1994, a remake was created as well, which you may want to check out with your grandkids.
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Much like John Hughes’ “Home Alone,” this is a newer Christmas classic, as it was released in 1989. Written and produced by Hughes too, “Christmas Vacation” is arguably the funniest Christmas movie ever created. You’ll practically laugh nonstop! If you’re in the mood for a classic comedy, look no further than this one!
“Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” There is no doubt about it. Rankin/Bass Productions was on a roll in the 1960s, as it also released the holiday classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” another stop-motion animated television special. Even though it was released more than 60 years ago, this classic is as popular as ever. You just can’t help but pull for Rudolph! Just as your children did, your grandkids—and their kids—will love this movie as well.
So, go ahead and invite your Beacon Hill neighbors to watch these classics with you. Or maybe invite a longtime friend, a grandchild, or a child to reminisce on the past with you. You’ll enjoy every minute!
