Perhaps you consider yourself a lifelong gardener. Or maybe it’s a fairly new hobby for you. Regardless of your past experiences, Beacon Hill has an opportunity for you to relish this passion all spring and summer—through its Community Garden.
Roughly half an acre in size, the garden welcomes every resident to come together, grow flowers and produce, and ultimately watch our culinary team use the produce in our restaurants.
As you prepare to garden in the coming months, don’t forget about the following tips before you start enjoying this remarkable hobby.
Buy Proper Tools. Be sure to purchase lightweight tools that are easy to use. Typically, tools comprised of aluminum or fiberglass are the best options. In addition, buy a garden claw and a long-reach tool that’s easy to grip, along with knee pads if you plan to garden without a chair or stool.
Protect Yourself with Your Clothing. While proper tools will minimize your likelihood of injuries and straining, suitable clothing will protect you from the sun. Consider purchasing lightweight pants, a long-sleeved, lightweight shirt, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Wear Waterproof Gloves. Ensure you wear gloves at all times—preferably gloves that are heavy-duty and waterproof. Your hands will remain clean, dry, and protected from blisters and cuts, regardless of what you’re gardening.
Purchase Closed-toe Shoes. Of all the shoes you can wear, closed-toe shoes are the most ideal while you’re gardening. They’ll protect your feet all season long. Buy high-quality ones too, which will last for several months.
Shield Your Skin and Lips. Apply sunscreen on any skin that’s exposed. Ensure your sunscreen is at least SPF 30 for utmost protection. Furthermore, don’t forget to apply lip balm that’s SPF 30, at minimum, too. And, finally, wear insect repellent each time you garden.
Stretch Before You Garden. Once you’ve purchased all of these items, you’ll be all set to garden. But, before you do, be sure to stretch. You’ll reduce your odds of injuries and future soreness considerably!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Like many hobbies, when you’re gardening, you’ll be so caught up in the moment that you may forget about some basics, including drinking water. But always bring an ample amount of water with you—and drink it steadily while you garden!
Bring Your Cell Phone. Even if you’re gardening with other residents, bring your cell phone with you each time. You never know when you may need to use it!
Garden During the Coolest Hours. Strive to plan your schedule around the most suitable times to garden: either in the morning or evening. Your likelihood of sunburns, heat strokes, and dehydration will decline substantially.
Take Breaks. You may lose track of time while you garden. Before you know it, you could very well be gardening for hours at a time! Set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to take breaks, cool off, and relax.
Socialize. Gardening is a terrific opportunity for you to meet other residents. Suggest certain times to meet up with other gardeners throughout the week.
Seek Help. Finally, if you need help from Beacon Hill professionals, don’t be afraid to ask. They’ll be more than willing to assist you!
By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll enjoy Beacon Hill’s Community Garden to its fullest—from the moment that plants start growing to the days they’re harvested.
