There is no doubt about it. Change is difficult.
Perhaps you just moved to Beacon Hill. Maybe you’re thinking about moving here in the near future. Or you’ve possibly been here for some time and you’re still acclimating to community living.
No matter what your circumstance is, the adjustment to a new (or newer) home can be challenging. However, by meeting new friends, the adjustment can become much easier.
Consider the following advice as you prepare to meet new people and enjoy the next chapter of your life to the fullest.
Be Active. Beacon Hill has several fitness classes, activities, and games to choose from. You’ll not only maintain your health but also make new friends while doing so. Regardless of your fitness level, Beacon Hill has an option for you too, ensuring no one is left out.
Be Involved as Often as Possible. There is no better way to meet new people than to become involved. Beacon Hill offers many events to participate in, from classes to concerts. You may pursue opportunities to continue past hobbies or learn about new ones as well. Either way, you’ll quickly meet dozens of residents and find new friends along the way!
Break Bread with Your Neighbors. One of the best times to meet people is during meals. After all, people are often more relaxed and open to conversations when they’re eating. Beacon Hill has four onsite restaurants and a food truck for you to relish, resulting in countless opportunities for conversations. From there, deep connections and strong future friendships may begin.
Host a Party in Your Residence. To meet new friends, you may have to step outside of your comfort zone. For example, you may not have hosted an event in years, but why not do it again? Start by inviting your closest neighbors and then expand from there, as you meet other people in classes and activities. By doing so, you’ll have a variety of connections.
Take Advantage of Common Areas. Beacon Hill is a very large community with numerous common areas. You’re welcome to use them as often as you’d like. By exploring common areas like The Club Room (for billiards), The Game Room, The Studio, and The Vistas Theater, you’ll see nearly every resident at some point. These encounters will likely lead to new friendships in no time!
Use Social Media. Sometimes you’ll have to use social media to break the ice with some fellow residents. With social media, you can slowly learn about your new acquaintances, discuss events and social gathering ideas, and maintain contact consistently. For starters, please follow our Facebook page—you’ll meet dozens of residents quickly!
Volunteer. Consider gathering with other residents to create volunteer groups that will support the Grand Rapids community. Or become involved with the Mary and Martha Guild, which organizes service projects and volunteer opportunities to connect with Beacon Hill residents across the continuum of care. Through volunteerism, you’ll also meet new acquaintances who have hearts for service—commonalities that may result in strong bonds.
Simply put, Beacon Hill has plenty of opportunities for you to create new friendships. Through these suggestions, you’ll have enriching, fun, and meaningful relationships sooner, rather than later!
