12 Outdoor Activities to Enjoy This Fall in Grand Rapids

There is nothing quite like being outside, especially on a gorgeous fall day. The sun is shining on your face. The leaves are starting to change. And the weather is “just right.”

Is there any better time to enjoy outdoor activities than during the fall? It’s hard to argue that there is!

In preparation for many beautiful fall days ahead, here is a list of some outdoor activities you can partake in before Old Man Winter arrives yet again.

An Apple a Day. It’s hard to beat a fresh apple, especially on a perfect fall day. Grand Rapids has an array of farms and wineries, which have countless types of apples to choose from, including Farmhaus Farms and Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery.

Be a Kid Again! Grand Rapids has several corn mazes and pumpkin patches that you can visit this fall. Go outside and simply relish your time in nature—just like you did when you were a kid! Consider options like Ed Dunneback & Girls Farm and Wells Orchards.

Become a Photographer. Arguably, there is no better way to capture a memory than taking a picture of it in real time. Bring your camera or cell phone outside and start taking pictures of the stunning orange, purple, red, and yellow hues. Take a deep breath and savor the utter beauty of fall!

Catch a Monster Fish! Or not? Regardless of whether you catch a trophy fish, a minnow, or nothing, fishing is a great outdoor activity option in the fall. Cherish the views, talk to your friends, and simply unwind.

Collect Leaves. Gather some Beacon Hill friends together and find some leaves. After all, Grand Rapids has numerous types of trees—with leaves of all colors, shapes, and sizes. You’ll then be able to decorate your residence with them (along with acorns and pine cones).

Create a Birdhouse. Unfortunately, many birds will start migrating south, prior to winter. Witness them in action before they leave—while building your own birdhouse! It’s extremely satisfying to sit back, relax, and see the fruits of your labor once it’s been created, too.

Dance the Day…or Night…Away. When you were younger, did you ever swing dance? Have you ever been interested in swing dancing again? Now you can, as Grand Rapids has outdoor swing classes. Each class is free, opened to the public, and taught by a professional dance instructor. Go swing dance the day (or night) away!

Make a Craft. Once you gather together those acorns, leaves, and pine cones, create a fall craft with them. Many consider crafting to be an indoor activity, but it doesn’t have to be! Take your supplies outside and create your next craft in the great outdoors.

Participate in Outdoor Art Classes. The Grand Rapids area has various opportunities available for you to unwind, paint, socialize, and soak in the sun. For instance, Ghosthouse Fine Art Studio is offering watercolor classes in public parks, while the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has outdoor painting classes.

Practice Mindfulness. To enhance your mental and physical health, while embracing the fall weather, consider participating in outdoor yoga. It will improve your focus, memory, mood, and strength, among other positives.

Ride a Bike. If you’re able, consider riding a bicycle on Grand Rapids’ wide range of sidewalks and nature trails. A great exercise, bicycling will also allow you to see more sights in a shorter time than if you simply walked.

Take a Walk! Sometimes your time outside can be as simple as a walk though. There’s nothing better than a stroll with (or without) friends, as you observe the fall foliage. Blandford Nature Center has three trails, while Provin Trails Park has many walking options too, leading to a true escape in nature.

Go out and enjoy the fall weather with your Beacon Hill friends, starting today! After all, winter will be here before you know it!
