How to Beat the Winter Blues

A blanket of freshly fallen snow. The sights of children building snowmen. The joy of a hot cup of coffee or cocoa near the fire.

Winter, especially in Michigan, can be breathtaking, relaxing, and just plain fun. But let’s face it. It can also be long—very long!

As a result, the “winter blues” start to set in, especially around this time of year. To overcome the “blues,” here are some tips to consider, preferably sooner than later.

Be as creative as possible. Focus on creating something each day (or, if you’re creating a time-consuming craft, dedicate yourself to working on it every day). When your mind is actively occupied on a project, your mood will simultaneously improve. And you’ll be very proud of yourself and your achievements each time you finish a project!

Buy light therapy glasses. In recent years, light therapy glasses have become more and more popular. Why? They emit bright light directly into people’s eyes, offering them a compromise whenever they lack sunlight. Before you purchase these glasses, please consult your doctor though. If your doctor believes they’re suitable for you, they could be a great gift idea!

Create healthy snacks. By focusing on eating small, healthy snacks throughout the day, you’ll avoid an all-too-common wintertime issue: eating unhealthy comfort foods. Not only will comfort foods negatively influence your physical well-being, but they’ll also impact your mental health long term, as too much sugar may cause mood swings.

Drink water all day long. The benefits of water simply can’t be overlooked. By focusing on drinking water throughout the day, your physical health will not only improve, but your mental health will, too!

Exercise more often. Since you’re likely not as active during the winter as you are throughout any other season, it’s important for you to commit to exercising even more now. You don’t have to commit to an hours-long workout. Simply focus on some light weightlifting and frequent walking, even if you’re inside the entire time.

Help others. Simply put, when we help other people, we feel better—rain, shine, or snow. Perhaps your neighbor needs some assistance with a little project? Or you’ve heard about a family in financial need? Whatever you can do to lend an extra hand, consider doing so this winter.

Meditate. Recently, Beacon Hill discussed the benefits of meditation. During the winter, these benefits may be even more noticeable. Take some time to just breathe, relax, and focus on positivity. You’ll probably forget about the frigid temperatures before long!

Organize your residence. Did you know that by having an organized space around you, your mood will likely improve right away? Since you’re indoors for hours on end during the winter, focus on enhancing the areas you see all day long. More often than not, you’ll feel better, regardless of the weather outside.

Purchase a light therapy lamp. By buying a light therapy lamp—which offers bright, UV-free light that actually mimics sunlight—your body will feel nearly like it does during the spring and summer. In turn, your mood will drastically improve, day in and day out. Be sure to use it every day though!

Sit near some windows. Again, the more exposure you can have to light, the better. Aside from buying light therapy products, avoid closing your blinds and curtains during the day, too. Instead, sit near as many windows as you can each day and enjoy every bit of sunshine.

As winter continues, you can indeed defeat—or at least reduce—the “blues,” starting today. Consider implementing some (if not all) of these tips soon, as they’ll help you relish winter, possibly more than you have in years!
