Champion of Literacy Award

Foundation Board Chair Micki Benz Honored with Champion of Literacy Award

Mentor, advocate, champion, friend – these are words used to describe Michaelyn “Micki” Benz, earned from years of lending her time and talents for the betterment of our community. Those who know Micki know she’s long been a positive force in West Michigan. She’s volunteered for dozens of organizations and committees since she moved to Grand Rapids from Ohio in the late 1970s.

We are grateful to be one of many West Michigan organizations that have benefited from Micki’s leadership and generosity. As chair of the Beacon Hill Foundation Board, Micki has helped enrich the lives of our residents, staff and the Eastgate community through charitable giving, events and more. She’s also been closely involved with our Community Sustainability Initiative.

Outside of Beacon Hill at Eastgate, Micki brings her passion to organizations like the Literacy Center of West Michigan, which works alongside community members as they improve their reading and language skills. An English teacher by training, it’s no wonder Micki found her way to the organization – and remained involved for more than a decade. She served on the board of the Literacy Center for 12 years while also serving as a volunteer literacy coach herself. She continues to serve as a literacy coach today.

Her longtime dedication to the organization’s mission was recently recognized during the Literacy Center’s “Spellebration.” Micki was honored with the Champion of Literacy Award, which recognizes her efforts to bring about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy.

Over the years, Micki has also been the recipient of the Grand Rapids Chamber’s ATHENA award, Grand Rapids Business Journal’s 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan, Michigan Women’s Foundation’s Women of Achievement & Courage in Healthcare and Senior Neighbors’ 16 over 60.

Please join us in celebrating Micki’s achievements and her continued service to our organization, among others in West Michigan!
