Sleep is an essential function and it’s how our mind and body recharge. It is vital for our
health, immune system and mental function. Without adequate and restful sleep, the
brain and body cannot function properly. The average adult requires somewhere
between seven and nine hours of sleep. Here are some fast facts on SLEEP:
• On average, we spend about two hours per night dreaming
• Body temperature during sleep drops by one to two degrees Fahrenheit
• 35.2% of all adults in the U.S. report sleeping on average for less than 7 hours
per night
• We are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep.
• If it takes you less than 5 minutes to fall asleep at night, you might be sleep
deprived. Ideally, falling asleep should take 10 to 15 minutes
As we age, circadian rhythms change as people age, often leading to disrupted sleep
patterns. Poor sleep can lead to and/or exasperate many health concerns including
learning, memory, mood, blood sugar regulation, stress, creativity, reducing quality of
life as we age. In addition, long term sleep deprivation can lead to increased risk of
infection, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain and falls. Improving sleep hygiene and
developing healthy habits can encourage better sleep and overall improved health.
Simple tips include: avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, reduce bedroom distractions
such as television and smartphones, regular exercise, and have a consistent sleep
schedule and routine.
