New and emerging technology offers many great tools for seniors living in retirement communities. These options provide fresh ways to stay connected, monitor your health, and make independent living easier and safer. Here are four “smart” tools to check out:
Smart Video Screen Displays
Smart video screen displays, like the Amazon Echo or Google Nest, can connect seniors in a variety of ways. From video calls with family members or even telehealth appointments, smart displays can offer a variety of helpful features. Smart displays can also answer questions, like Amazon’s Alexa feature, such as what’s today’s weather? Or set timers or reminders, to take medications or check the oven, for example. And for emergencies, smart displays can also alert authorities or family members with simple “Call 911” voice commands.
Smart Wearable Devices
Smartwatches, like the Apple Watch, or fitness trackers can help monitor heart rate and remind you to exercise, by counting steps or sending reminders to “move.” The Oura ring, for example, collects data on more than 20 biometrics related to wellbeing. Many of these devices also offer built-in GPS tracking so others can be aware of your movement or find you if needed.
Smart or Motion-Detector Lights and Outlets
Smart lightbulbs and outlets can be controlled by a verbal command, such as “Turn on hallway light,” and managed by a phone or tablet. Motion-detector lights will turn on when movement is detected within a certain range. Either option can be helpful when navigating dark hallways or bathrooms during the night.
Smart Pill Dispensers
Smart pill dispensers use technology to remind patients to take their medications at dedicated times, and automatically dispense the right pills according to the prescribed schedule. This way, only the correct pills are available at the time you need to take them. And with sound or light alerts, you’ll never miss a dose.
