Beacon Hill Sustainability Tips
Earlier this year, Beacon Hill launched its Beacon Hill’s Sustainability Plan, focusing on improvement across three key metrics—energy, water, and materials.
Now is the time to increase your sustainability and ensure the earth is cleaner and greener for your grandkids. To do so, let’s take the following next steps—through these suggestions!
Buy Eco-friendly Furniture. Whenever possible, purchase furniture that’s environmentally friendly. Whether you choose furniture that’s comprised of recycled materials, or you decide to reuse certain pieces of your previously used furniture for other items, you’ll positively impact the environment.
Dispose Items Properly. If you have certain items in your residence that aren’t recyclable, ensure you’re disposing them properly. For example, don’t ever throw cell phones, televisions, and other devices in the trash. Instead, ask a Beacon Hill staff member for assistance on how to dispose them correctly.
Don’t Purchase Single-use Plastics. Avoid buying single-use plastics as much as possible. Instead, focus on buying plastic items that can be recycled regularly, leading to consistent, long-lasting sustainability.
Eat Smaller Meals. Try to eat smaller meals throughout the day, rather than three large meals. You’ll likely waste far less food, as you’ll save resources and minimize waste simultaneously. When you eat at Beacon Hill’s restaurants, try ordering a half-portion if you have a lower appetite that meal. Simply order what you’ll actually eat. You’ll be helping save on food waste!
Look at Your Products Before You Throw Them Away. Naturally, your first instinct may be to throw your glass, metal, paper, and plastic products away. But, whenever possible, try to stop, look at the products, and verify whether or not they can be recycled before you throw them in your garbage can. You may be very surprised by what—and how much—you can recycle!
Reuse, Reuse, Reuse. Rather than using paper or plastic grocery bags, buy reusable grocery bags. Furthermore, repurpose your old furniture into new pieces. A little paint goes a long way! Finally, purchase clothes that are renowned for their longevity. Reuse, reuse, reuse!
Think Outside the Box. To reduce waste, you’ll need to think outside the box more. By doing so, you’ll likely learn about recyclable items that you never considered before. Research online to see which items in your residence are truly recyclable—and which ones aren’t—before you throw any other items away.
Use Powder Detergents. As you clean your dishes in your dishwasher, purchase powder detergents, rather than plastic bottles. This same advice applies to washing clothes, too. You’ll be reducing your plastic waste considerably in no time.
Visit Neighbors with Similar Goals. Create a sustainability community at Beacon Hill by bonding with people who share your passion for eco-friendliness. Inspire one another and learn from each other!
By minimizing your waste—starting today—you’ll contribute to a brighter, more environmentally friendly future for your loved ones!
