Halloween Costumes for You—and Your Grandkids

Without question, Halloween is one of the most fun days of the year, especially from a grandparent’s standpoint.

You’ll receive pictures of your grandkids all dressed up in their costumes. You may even be able to see them trick-or-treating as you witness their joy in person. Better yet, you might even give them some candy.

But what if you could go one step further? What about trick-or-treating with them?

When you think about it, why not? Regardless of your mobility, you can join them and see their bliss all night long!

All you need is a costume, perhaps one that matches with theirs in some way. As you prepare to trick or treat with your grandkids, here are some DIY costumes to consider.

Astronauts. Maybe you and your grandkids will never travel to outer space. But you can all pretend you do—at least for one night. If you’re up to it, purchase fabric and create astronaut suits for you and your grandkids. Don’t forget about helmets (use cardboard) and jet packs (2-liter plastic bottles are perfect) either. Although these are the most difficult costumes to create on this list, no one will ever forget them!

A Beekeeper and Bees. These are relatively affordable, yet extremely creative costume ideas for you and your grandkids. Either buy or create black and yellow striped t-shirts, prior to creating bee wings and antennas. From there, you’ll also need to create a beekeeper suit for yourself, while using supplies from a local store like Hobby Lobby or Walmart.

Cookies and Milk. For these costumes, you’ll need quite a bit of cardboard, felt, and markers. Cut out your milk glass and cookie shapes and stand out from the crowd. Oh, and you can be a variety of cookies too, from chocolate chip to peanut butter. The sky is the limit!

Crayons. There are endless options, with regard to the types of crayons you and your grandkids could be—literally every shade of the rainbow and more. All you’ll need is construction paper, tape or glue, and markers or a Sharpie.

Frankensteins. You and your grandkids could also dress up as Frankensteins. Be sure to purchase black and green makeup, along with wigs, plastic bolts that can be applied to each person’s neck, and the appropriate Frankenstein attire (black pants, shirts, and suits). These costumes aren’t necessarily as “outside of the box” as others, but sometimes classics are great options as well.

Golfers. More than likely, there are plenty of golf clubs or bags at Beacon Hill. Maybe your fellow residents will let you borrow theirs as you and your grandkids dress up as golfers this year? If you’d really like to stand out, consider buying knickers and knit hats, following suit with golfers’ attires 100 years ago.

Ice Cream Cones. If you ask your grandkids what their favorite food is, you may very well hear “ice cream.” Why not dress up as their favorite food and remind everyone of the joys of summer? Be sure to buy some construction paper (or cardboard), along with some markers and tape or glue, and then create your cones with your grandkids.

Mummies. As another old tradition, you can’t go wrong with mummy costumes! Buy some rags, stain them with coffee, and ensure you have enough makeup and black clothes for everyone. You and your grandkids will feel like Egyptian royalty in no time!

Pizzas. Perhaps your grandkids didn’t say that ice cream is their favorite food. They may very well say “pizza” instead! Dress up as pizza slices, which you and your grandkids can create together. Again, buy some construction paper or cardboard, markers, and tape or glue—and then enjoy the magic of your creations!

Skeletons. Yet again, these costumes aren’t as “outside of the box” as many others listed in this article. However, they’re affordable and easy to make. Simply buy however many shirts you need, draw a skeleton on each one with a marker, and then apply makeup to your and your grandkids’ faces and arms.

Perhaps you don’t feel like making costumes though? If that’s the case, consider buying some of these either online or at your local stores.

As shown, the options are practically limitless! All that truly matters is if you’re able to spend time with your grandkids. Ensure this is a Halloween that you—and they—will never forget!
